The Putnam County sheriff reports the arrest of a pair of Philipstown brothers on felony drug possession and sales charges. The investigation began after an undercover deputy sheriff developed information arousing suspicion that two men were selling cocaine and “crack” cocaine from their home.
On Sept. 30, narcotics officers, assisted by patrol deputies, arrested 30-year-old Peter M. Smith and his 34-year-old brother, Jason Smith, of 334 Main Street, Nelsonville. Peter Smith was charged with three counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance in the third degree and three counts of criminal sales of a controlled substance in the third degree.  Jason Smith was charged with one count each of criminal possession of a controlled substance in the third degree and criminal sale of a controlled substance in the third degree.  Each count is a class “B” felony crime.
The pair was arraigned before Nelsonville Village Justice Dennis A. Zenz and remanded to the Putnam County Correctional Facility.  Peter Smith’s bail was set at $10,000 cash or $20,000 secured bond, while his brother, Jason, was sent to jail without bail.  Both men are scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 13, 2010, at 5 p.m. A conviction of any count of the crimes charged may result in a sentence of 2 to 12 years in a New York State correctional facility.
