Route 9 closed for several hours

At approximately 5:40 p.m., on Saturday (Nov. 27), Putnam County Sheriff’s Department deputies and investigators, along with members of the Village of Cold Spring Police Department and Metropolitan Transit Authority Police, responded to a report of a serious personal-injury auto accident on Route 9 in Philipstown. Upon arrival they found two vehicles involved in a head-on collision. According to the Sheriff’s Department, preliminary investigation indicated that 51-year-old Teresa A. Kenny of  Vestal, N.Y., was driving northbound on Route 9 when her car drove across the double yellow line into the southbound lane and struck an oncoming car driven by 81-year-old Rose M. O’ Keefe of Peekskill.

Members of the North Highlands Volunteer Fire Department extricated O’Keefe from her vehicle.  She was flown by an emergency medical helicopter to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, where she later died from her injuries.  Ms. Kenny sustained minor injuries and was taken by the Philipstown Volunteer Ambulance Corps to St. Francis Hospital in Poughkeepsie. There were no other occupants in either car involved in the crash.

Route 9 was closed for approximately three hours and the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
