5th graders planting and identifying trees

Garrison School students celebrated Earth Day in the School Forest participating in curriculum-related ecological programs.  This year’s theme was ‘Our Backyard’ and students discussed what that meant to them before, during and after the event. Every child was given a journal designed to give them the opportunity to reflect on nature by sitting and thinking in their own “magic spot” and recording their observations.  When they returned to school they brought a piece of nature with them to put in the Earth Loom and then drew chalk drawings on the concrete wall in the courtyard to depict what they enjoyed most about the day. Principal Impellittiere added, “We had a spectacular day and I am so pleased our students had the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful weather and participate in so many outdoor activities.”
