How to Write the Publishable Story Workshop shares the weekend

Up and running again at full speed, Arts on the Lake (AotL), 640 Route 52 in Lake Carmel, offers Open Mouth, vaudeville for the 21st century, on Saturday, May 5, at 8 p.m. and a workshop in How to Write the Publishable Story on Sunday, May 6, at 3 p.m.

“Open Mouth is a performance of short skits and music,” said artistic director of Arts on the Lake James Shearwood. “In preparing our strategic plan last spring, there were many requests to bring it back.” Already scheduled for this edition are upstate singer/songwriters Ellen and Roger Bruno (Too Human) plus The Knox Sisters, a young singing duo from Lake Carmel. There is also the short play Seat Taken by Gabrielle Fox, plus an arrangement of new poems by Tony Howarth with music by Howard Kilik.

A highlight of this Open Mouth will be the American premiere of In The Dead a new play by young Spanish playwright Diego Fdez Sandez. Staged by Blue Horse Repertory Director Lora Lee Ecobelli, the cast includes Judy Allen, Jay Ciccone, Jeff Green, Ed Kenny and Caitlen O’Heaney.

To preserve the family-friendly, informal nature of Open Mouth, prices are $10 for the general public and $8 for members of AotL.

On Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m., the Center becomes the site of How to Write the Publishable Story, a workshop in writing articles and press releases for local papers led by former managing editor of the Putnam Press Marty Collins, current managing editor of the Putnam Press/Times Holly Toal and chief operations officer of The Examiner News Faith Ann Butcher.

Organized by the AotL Public Relations Group, the workshop is open to all levels of experience. In addition to covering basic newspaper writing such as the lead sentence and the reverse pyramid format, participants will re-work story material supplied by the editors to achieve publishable stories. Scheduled for two hours, the public admission is $5. There is no charge for students or members of Arts on the Lake. Reservations should be made to [email protected] or 845 228-2685.

Tickets and information on all upcoming events at Arts on the Lake can be accessed at AotL website. Reservations and messages can be left at 845-228-2685.
