Part of Path Through History Weekend
The West Point Foundry will offer tours as part of the statewide Path Through History Weekend. These 90-minute tours will recount the importance of the 19th-century ironworks whose remains are located within the preserve. A pioneer of America’s Industrial Revolution, the foundry manufactured some of the nation’s first steam engines and locomotives as well as Parrott guns, cannons credited with winning the Civil War.
While walking on trails that follow historic pathways, participants will learn about the foundry’s production process, its largely immigrant workforce and the 15-month construction project, completed last year, that transformed the preserve into an exciting “outdoor museum.”
