Carmel Bank Robbed

Putnam County Sheriff Donald B. Smith reports the robbery of the Carmel branch of the Putnam County National Bank, located at the Putnam Plaza Shopping Center on Route 6.

At approximately 6 p.m. Monday (June 23), a white male entered the bank and approached a teller. He handed the teller a note demanding money. Although no weapon was displayed, the note warned the bank employee that the suspect was in possession of a handgun and would use it if necessary. The teller surrendered an unspecified amount of cash to the robber who then fled the bank on foot.

Sheriff’s deputies and investigators, along with members of the Town of Carmel Police Department, their K-9 Unit, New York State Police and their aviation unit, and the F.B.I. searched the area for the suspect, however, he was able to elude police.

The suspect is described as a white male with a slim build, approximately 30 years old, and approximately 5’8” tall.

Anyone having information about this robbery is urged to call the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office Bureau of Criminal Investigation at 845-225-8060. All calls will be kept confidential.

NOTE: A charge is merely an accusation and a defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
