Film examines life of blacklisted writer and actor

The Movies That Matter Beacon series will show the documentary Trumbo on Friday, April 29, at 7:30 p.m. The film examines the effects on individuals and families of a Congressional pursuit of Communists in Hollywood after World War II. Dalton Trumbo was one of several writers, directors, and actors who invoked the First Amendment in refusing to answer questions under oath. It follows Trumbo to prison, to exile in Mexico with his family, to poverty, to the public shunning of his children, to his writing under others’ names and to an incomplete vindication.

Discussion and refreshments follow the film, which will be screened at the First Presbyterian Church at 50 Liberty St. For more information, visit moviesthatmatterbeacon.org. The screening is free but donations are accepted.
