Remembering the Holocaust

Memorials in Poughkeepsie and Newburgh

A YomHashoah/Holocaust commemoration and lecture will be held at Hall Theatre at Dutchess Community College on Monday, May 2. The ceremony and candle lighting will begin at 6:30 p.m., followed by a talk by Hasia Diner, a professor of American Jewish History at New York University, titled Fitting Memorials: American Jews Confront the Holocaust, 1945-1962. Rabbi Brent Spodek of the Beacon Hebrew Alliance will offer the invocation. The theater is located at 53 Pendell Road in Poughkeepsie.

In Newburgh, Mount Saint Mary College will hold its 16th annual Holocaust Commemoration at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 1, at the Aquinas Theatre on campus, 330 Powell Ave. The event will begin with a prayer, followed by a ballet with musical accompaniment from the Newburgh Symphony Orchestra. The ballet, The Secret Annex, is based on The Diary of Anne Frank. Tickets are available for $15 for adults and  $10 for seniors and children from newburghjcc.org or call 845-561-6602, ext. 4. The commemoration is sponsored by the college, the Newburgh Jewish Community Center and the Jewish Federation of Greater Orange County.
