State releases fishing guide, and fish

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has published a free manual, The I FISH NY Beginners’ Guide to Freshwater Fishing, that can be downloaded at the agency’s site. It includes chapters on New York fish, tackle and techniques and ice fishing, among other topics, and can be downloaded at dec.ny.gov.

Brown trout

Each spring, the DEC stocks more than 2.3 million brook, brown and rainbow trout in some 300 lakes and ponds. In this area, the agency released 5,600 brown trout in Sprout Creek in East Fishkill, 3,500 in Fishkill Creek in Beacon and Fishkill and 90 in Foundry Brook in Philipstown. Brown trout, which can grow up to three feet long, are said to be one of the most difficult trout species to catch.
