Lisle Gilbert

Lisle Barrett Gilbert, 74, of Waitsfield, Vt., died on Sept. 17, 2016.

Born in Garrison to O. Rundle and Anne Gilbert, he attended Proctor Academy in New Hampshire and later graduated from Nathaniel Hawthorne College. He was an avid skier, race car driver and poker player.

Survivors include a son, Lisle Gilbert, Jr.; two daughters, Sarah Gilbert and Caroline Gilbert; and two brothers, Townsend Gilbert and Robert Gilbert.

A gravesite service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 8, at St. Philip’s Church in Garrison. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.

Maria V. Meares (1939-2016)

Maria V. Meares, 76, died on Sept. 6, 2016, in Omaha, Neb. She was born on Nov. 12, 1939, in Taunton, Mass., to Charles and Anastasia (Manikas) Vavolotis. After graduating from Taunton High School, she attended St. Basil’s Academy in Garrison for four years.

She graduated in 1964 and received the Caryatids Scholarship to continue her studies at the Arsakeion Academy in Athens. The mission of the St. Basil’s program was to teach young women in the language and tradition of the church in order to provide support for Greek Orthodox Churches throughout the country. Given the choice between Jacksonville, Florida and Omaha, Maria accepted the position of director of the Greek School at St. John’s in Omaha.

Within a couple of months she met the love of her life, Frank Meares, with whom she enjoyed more than 50 years of marriage. She is survived by her three children. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church, 602 Park Ave., Omaha, NE 68105.
