Burned for two days off South Mountain Pass

Firefighters from Continental Village, Cold Spring, Garrison, North Highlands and Putnam Valley, along with forest rangers, responded on Sunday, Sept. 25, to a brush fire that scorched more than four acres off South Mountain Pass in Garrison. It was apparently started by a camp fire that was not properly put out.

Because of the dry conditions, the fire was a challenge and continued to burn into Monday. Because it destroyed the vegetation to the roots, the ground was soaked with water. The hose and equipment trucks packed up about 3:30 p.m. and, after an overnight rain, the fire appeared on Tuesday morning to have been extinguished.
