Julio Carreras (1943-2017)

Julio Carreras, 73, of Beacon, died Jan. 30, 2017. He was born May 21, 1943. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Feb. 4 at St. John the Evangelist Church in Beacon with burial at Fishkill Rural Cemetery.

Phyllis Ginsberg (1932-2017)

Phyllis Ginsberg, 84, of Beacon, died at her home on Jan. 28, 2017, after a long illness.

Born April 1, 1932 in Brooklyn, she was the daughter of Hyman and Estelle Goldberg. She was a graduate of Queens College and taught second grade at the South Avenue School for 21 years until her retirement in 1987. She began her teaching career as an elementary school teacher in Philadelphia.

Phyllis was a member of Beacon Hebrew Alliance, a life member of Hadassah, a member of the Southern Dutchess Country Club and a member of the NYS Retired Teachers Association. Later in life she enjoyed water color painting and attended art class taught by Patricia Braun in Fishkill.

Her survivors include her husband of 64 years, Dr. Harold B. Ginsberg of Beacon, her children, Dr. Stuart Ginsberg (Mimi)of Arlington, Virginia; Ellen Ginsberg (George Schutzer) of McLean, Virginia; and Shelley Leibowitz of Stamford. She also is survived by her grandchildren Allison Ginsberg (Kevin Walter), Sarah Ginsberg, Adam Ginsberg, Harrison Schutzer, Kendall Schutzer, Benjamin Leibowitz and Abigail Leibowitz.

Funeral services were held Jan. 31 at Beacon Hebrew Alliance, with interment at Mt. Judah Cemetery in Ridgewood. Memorial contributions may be made to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Hospital, 1275 York Ave., New York, NY 10065, or the Hospice of Dutchess County, 374 Violet Ave., Poughkeepsie, NY 12601.

Toya Smith (1969-2017)

Toya J. Smith, 47, of Beacon and formerly of Peekskill, died on Jan. 29, 2017. She worked as a teacher’s aide at Peekskill Middle School.

Toya was born Oct. 26, 1969 in Peekskill to Robert and Marilou (Hoffer) Robinson. She is survived by her three children; Donny Jr., Brandon and Ashley Smith. She also is survived by her seven siblings: Ursula Jones, Debbie Stuart, Harry Robinson, Tyrone Robinson, Tamika Robinson, Jolene Roach and Takima Jackson.

Visitation will take place on Feb. 6 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Joseph Nardone Funeral Home, 414 Washington St., Peekskill, with a funeral service at 8 p.m. during visitation.

Melissa Zukowski (1968-2017)

Melissa Zukowski

Melissa A. Zukowski, 48, of Beacon, died Jan. 29, 2017.

Melissa was born July 23, 1968 in Beacon, the daughter of Joseph J. Lotsko and Sharyn L. (Mayen) Mathis. On June 16, 1990 Melissa married Douglas J. Zukowski in Fishkill.

She was employed by Rose and Kiernan Insurance in Fishkill as a client service manager. Her children were the love of her life and she loved being and working with horses.

She is survived by her husband; three daughters: Kayla Zukowski and her boyfriend Kyle Cantwell of Delhi; Chelsea Zukowski and her boyfriend Ryan Pingitore of Beacon; and Haleigh Zukowski of Beacon.

She also is survived by her father and his wife, Catherine, of Poughkeepsie; her mother Sharyn Mathis of Hyde Park; her sister Amanda Wegman (Karl) of Hyde Park; her brothers Joseph J. Lotsko Jr. of San Jose, California and Erik Mathis (Tiffany) of Georgia; and a granddaughter, Lily Cantwell.

A memorial service was held Feb. 3 at the Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home in Poughkeepsie. Burial was private. Memorial donations may be made to Haleigh Zukowski for her scholarship fund.
