Nancy Bayer (1955-2017)

Nancy Bayer, 61, of Beacon, died Feb. 3, 2017.

Nancy was born Feb. 27, 1955, in Brooklyn, the daughter of Joseph and Henrietta Bayer.

She is survived by a brother, Arthur Bayer (Barbara), a sister, Helen Bayer Northmore (Michael), nephews and nieces Sally, Jessica, Craig, David and Stephen, and close friends Josiane Hippolyte, John Asaro, Marie Di Gongi and Shelly Finn.

A mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Feb. 10 at St. John’s the Evangelist in Beacon, with interment at Cold Spring Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Sandra McCarthy (1935-2017)

Sandra Nussbickel McCarthy, 81, a former resident of Beacon, died Feb. 3, 2017 in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

Sandra was born June 8, 1935 to Eduardo Alfonso and Mildred Irene (Leadbitter) Traviesas in Poughkeepsie. She grew up in Brooklyn and Stewart Manor, Long Island. She graduated from New Paltz State Teacher’s College in 1958 with a degree in elementary education.

She married Herbert Nussbickel in 1958, and they lived in Beacon, where she taught kindergarten. She and Herb enjoyed acting in local theater productions with the Gilbert and Sullivan Society and with County Players. In 1963, they moved to Catskill, where they raised their family and Sandy taught as a substitute teacher and later ran her own nursery school.

Sandy was widowed after 27 years of marriage and moved to Boca Raton, Florida, where she married Walter J. McCarthy. She is survived by her husband and children.

Services were held Feb. 11 in Catskill, with burial at Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery.

Arthur Mitchell (1934-2017)

Arthur Howard Mitchell, 82, of Poughkeepsie, a former longtime art teacher for the Beacon school district, died Feb. 9, 2017.

Born March 9, 1934 in New York City to Jack and Rose Mitchell, he graduated from Forest Hills High School in 1952 and was earned a bachelor’s in education and a bachelor’s in fine arts from Temple University. He served in the U.S. Army as a medical specialist in Okinawa and from 1957 to 1990 was an art teacher in the Beacon school system.
Arthur is survived by his wife of more than 60 years, Joan Mitchell, and their children Grant and Meridith. He also is survived by his grandchildren Michael, Alexandra and Jessica.
A memorial service was held on Feb. 12 at the Wm. G. Miller & Son Funeral Home in Poughkeepsie, with burial at Hebrew Benevolent Cemetery.
