Defeated by Port Jefferson, 43-30
The Haldane varsity girls’ basketball team achieved one goal this season — defeating Pine Plains, which had twice knocked them out of the state tournament — but could not get by Section 11 champ Port Jefferson on March 9, falling 43-30 at SUNY Old Westbury in the Class C regional final.
Port Jefferson, which earlier in the month won a sectional title for the first time in 90 years, advances to the final four at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy.
After a five-point run in the second quarter, Port Jefferson never trailed. It led by double digits for most of the fourth quarter, led by senior Courtney Lewis, who has scored 2,000 career points and finished with 18 points.
Allison Chiera led the Blue Devils with 12 points, Abbey Stowell added eight and freshman Olivia McDermott had six. Haldane shot only 27 percent from the floor.
The Blue Devils finished 18-6.
