Fox Attacks Woman in Mahopac

A Mahopac woman was attacked on Saturday, Aug. 5, in her yard by a fox, which then chased her into her home, according to the Putnam County Sheriff’s Department.

The woman was in the yard of her home on Agor Lane at about 5:45 p.m. when a gray fox emerged from woods and attacked her, police said.  The animal bit her left ankle and clawed her right ankle and foot, drawing blood.

The victim ran inside but the fox pursued her. The woman and her children fled and called 911. Sheriff’s deputies responded, along with paramedics, who gave he woman first aid and transported her to Putnam Hospital Center in Carmel.

Officers from the New York State Environmental Conservation Police were able to capture the fox inside the home. It will be tested for rabies at a state laboratory in Albany.

    • The Putnam County Health Department said on Aug. 8 that the fox tested positive for rabies. The woman is receiving treatment.
