Bill Supple

Bill Supple (1930-2017)

William F. Supple, 87, Wappinger Falls, died Nov. 4, 2017.

Bill was born in Beacon on Oct. 24, 1930, to Francis and Agnes Supple. The eldest of four children, he graduated from Beacon High School and worked at National Biscuit in Beacon until he enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1951. He served for two years, stationed in Germany as a tank driver in the First Army Tank Armor Division. While there, he represented the Army as a boxer, eventually becoming European light heavyweight champion.

Upon returning to Beacon, he embarked on a professional boxing career while also resuming work at National Biscuit. There he met Agnes Ann Bradley, also of Beacon, who later convinced him to give up boxing if he wanted to marry her. He did, beginning a long career with the state Department of Corrections in Beacon, initially as a prison guard, then advancing to a supervisory role. He also drove a school bus for the Beacon City School System for many years.

Bill and Agnes were married in Beacon on Sept. 11, 1955. They built a home in Wappinger Falls, where they raised their children, Billy and Dawn. Bill was a devoted husband and father, who took great pride in his children’s — and later, grandchildren’s — interests and accomplishments. He retired at age 62 when his first grandchild was born, in order to visit her once a month in Vermont as well as enjoy winters in Florida. He was an avid runner who enjoyed playing golf with his buddies and soaking up the sunshine at his backyard pool.

His five grandchildren adored their “Poppy,” who took an active role in their lives. He and “Nanny” enjoyed baby-sitting them when they were young, celebrating holidays with family, attending their sports, ballet and musical performances.

Agnes died in 2003. Two years later Bill was fortunate to meet his longtime friend and companion, Anne Cole of Poughkeepsie. She kept Bill busy with volunteer work and trips to the city for plays and traveling, and introduced him to a wider circle of friends and family as she also became very familiar with his family. An experienced nurse, she tended to him as he grew ill in recent months.

His family will miss his wonderful sense of humor, wisdom and great stories.

He is survived by his son, William (Bill) F. Supple Jr. (Toni) and his grandchildren: Anna Supple of Oceanside, California; Laura Supple, a student at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore; Rayne Supple, a student at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina; Emily Didylowski, a student at SUNY Brockport; and Molly Didylowski of Poughkeepsie. He also is survived by a brother, Roy Supple of Sebring, Florida.

Bill’s daughter, Dawn Didylowski, died unexpectedly after a brief hospitalization less than a week before his death, but the family is thankful Bill was never made aware of this tragedy before his passing.

A celebration and remembrance will be held at 10 a.m. on Nov. 25 at the Freedom Plains United Presbyterian Church on Route 55 in LaGrange.
