
Fred Jackson
Fred Jackson (1946-2017)
Fred Jackson, 71, a lifelong resident of Beacon, died Dec. 19, 2017, in the Dominican Republic, where he had temporary residency for the winter seasons.
Born June 30, 1946, in Beacon, Fred was the eldest of nine children. He was a retired foreman for Metro-North Railroad, a U.S. Marine veteran who served during the Vietnam War and a former member of the LCMC Motorcycle Club. In addition, he was a dedicated member of Narcotics Anonymous, and served as a program sponsor for more than 20 years. Fred was sober for the last 28 years of his life.
Fred is survived by his children, Jamal Jackson and Ashley Jackson; his mother Inez Batten; five brothers and two sisters; and five grandchildren and one great-grandson. A memorial service will be held on Jan. 10 at 4 p.m. at the St. Rocco’s Society, 26 S. Chestnut St., in Beacon.

Solveig Christiansen
Solveig Christiansen (1932-2018)
Solveig Christiansen, 85, of Beacon, died Jan. 1, 2018, at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie.
She was born in Bergen, Norway on May 12, 1932, the daughter of Harold and Agnes (Andersen) Huse. For many years, she worked aboard ships and assisted with passenger services. It was during this time that she met a co-worker, Magnus Stanley Christiansen. During a stopover in the U.S., they were married in Brooklyn. (Stanley died in 1992.)
In 1957, Solveig emigrated from Norway to the U.S. and settled in Beacon, where she and Stanley raised their family. She worked for many years as a seamstress for Beacon Looms. She was a dedicated member of the Fishkill Baptist Church, where she volunteered and participated in many of the church’s outreach programs. Solveig was a selfless person who was always concerned about the welfare of others, and never hesitated to help those in need.
Solveig is survived by her son, Sven Christiansen of Fishkill; her daughter, Linda Brown (Donnie) of Kingston; a granddaughter, Melissa Lauger; and great-granddaughters Kassandra and Brooke. She is also survived by her sister, Sigfried and her aunt Elvina, both in Norway.
A funeral service was held at McHoul Funeral Home in Hopewell Junction on Jan. 6, with burial at Fishkill Rural Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Fishkill Baptist Church, 107 Route 82, Fishkill, NY 12524.

Richard Russell Sr.
Richard Russell Sr. (1927-2018)
Richard Joseph Russell Sr., 90, of Newton and formally of Beacon, died Jan. 2, 2018, in North Carolina.
Born Sept. 13, 1927, he was the son of Arthur and Loretta (Deegan) Russell. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and retired from Nabisco Brands. He was married to Agnes Helen Russell for 65 years before her death.
He is survived by two daughters, Carol Christoffersen (Keith) of Candor and Margaret Grzybicki (Ronald) of Las Vegas; two sons, Richard Russell Jr. (Anna) of Newburgh and Christopher Russell (Betty) of Newton, North Carolina; 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
A funeral mass will be held in Beacon at a later date.

Maria Santana
Maria Santana
Maria Teresa Santana, 66, of Beacon, died Jan. 7, 2018 at her home surrounded by her family. She and her husband Alfredo Santos recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
Besides her husband, Maria is survived by her children Maribel Quinn (Jeffrey), Brenda Santos Espinal Santos (Raymond Espinal) and Jose Alfredo Santos (Cynthia). She also is survived by her grandchildren Dennis Santiago Jr., Joshua Santos, Carina Santos, Shayna Espinal, Ryan Espinal, Brendan Espinal, Darien Espinal, Sophia Espinal and Julia Quinn.
Friends may call at the Libby Funeral Home in Beacon from 4 to 8 p.m. on Jan. 10. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Jan. 11 at St. John the Evangelist Church in Beacon, with interment at St. Joachim’s Cemetery.
Edith VanBuren (1921-2018)
Edith Cecelia VanBuren, 96, of Fishkill, died Jan. 3, 2018, at the Pines at Poughkeepsie.
Born in Beacon on Dec. 2, 1921, she was the daughter of William and Elsie (Sarvis) Harrison. She was raised in Beacon and graduated from Beacon schools. Edith married William VanBuren, who died before her. She is survived by many nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Jan. 9 at Fishkill Rural Cemetery.
