Cold Spring quickly contains fuel
By Michael Turton
A truck delivering building materials to a home on Foundry Pond Road in North Highlands went off the road Tuesday afternoon (Feb. 20), leaking diesel fuel into a small ditch below the Lower Reservoir that supplies drinking water to the village of Cold Spring.
A hazardous materials crew from the Putnam County Department of Health responded, along with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, North Highlands Fire Department and Cold Spring Department of Water and Waste Water.
Absorbent mats and booms were used to contain the fuel and contaminated soil and water was removed. A statement issued by the Village of Cold Spring later indicated that the situation was “under control and will not affect the potable [water] supply.”
