Restaurants offer final sips

The River Valley Restaurant Group, which includes Taco Santana, Beacon Bread, Ziatun and Vegetalien in Beacon and Angelina’s in Cold Spring, as of April 1 will no longer provide straws with beverages. “We will keep them on hand until May 31 for the people who are going to cry about it,” it said.

By one estimate, Americans discard 500 million straws per day, or the equivalent of 3 million pounds of plastic. Many end up in the ocean.

While snorkeling in Australia, a diver found 319 straws in 20 minutes. She returned the next day and collected 294 more. (1 Million Women)

  1. Go-Go Pops, Go-Go Joe and Veggie Go-Go offer fun, stripy paper straws. All our disposables are compostable.

  2. This is wonderful. I have been wondering how I can have a bigger impact on this travesty. Cheers to restaurants for taking a stand and informing customers.

  3. Great decision, River Valley Restaurants! Same to Go-Go — and those are not cheap for you as the business owner. Thank you very much for doing the right thing. The market will catch up eventually right? :)
