Charged with damage that occurred March 30-31

Putnam County Sheriff deputies arrested a 17-year-old Cold Spring resident after a rash of vandalism in Cold Spring and Nelsonville overnight on Friday, March 30, and early Saturday, March 31.

The sheriff’s department said it and the Cold Spring Police Department received numerous complains on Saturday of vandalism. Officers from both departments canvassed the area and were able to obtain surveillance footage from local businesses.

After an investigation, on Wednesday (April 4), sheriff’s investigators arrested a 17-year-old male who lived in the area. He was charged with one count of felony criminal mischief for allegedly damaging the book-return box at the Butterfield Library and one count of misdemeanor criminal mischief for allegedly damaging a basketball hoop on Kemble Avenue.

Although he was charged as an adult, the Sheriff’s Department did not release the suspect’s name. He was released pending an appearance in the Village of Cold Spring Justice Court on April 11.

Any residents or business owners who were victims of vandalism on March 30-31 but have not been contacted by law enforcement are encouraged to call the Putnam County Sheriff at 845-225-4300 and ask for Investigator Paul Piazza Jr.
