Helen Chepley (1919-2018)
Helen Chepley, 98, a former resident of Cold Spring, died April 6, 2018, in Ridgeland, Missouri.
She was born in Yonkers on April 29, 1919, the daughter of Stephan and Julia (Andrechak) Ference. She graduated from Commerce High School in 1937 and on April 26, 1941, married Daniel Chepley. In 1981 she retired from the Parkway Casket Co., where she worked as a seamstress. Helen was a longtime parishioner of St. Mary’s Church (Immaculate Conception) in Yonkers and St. Mary, Mother of the Church in Fishkill.
She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Auger (George) of Hilton Head, South Carolina; her daughter, Barbara Montalto of Brandon, Missouri; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Marilyn Chepley of Tarrytown.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on April 13 at St. Mary, Mother of the Church, with interment at Oakland Cemetery in Yonkers.
Brenda Gerhard (1928-2018)
Brenda Gerhard, 89, of Peekskill and formerly of Cold Spring, died April 9, 2018.
Born Nov. 29, 1928, in New York City, she was the daughter of John and Ellen Catherine (Fleming) Gerhard. Brenda was a longtime schoolteacher for the Port Washington School District before her retirement.
She is survived by a sister, Helen Gerhard; her three brothers, John, James and Thomas, died before her. A memorial service will be held at Mary Mount Convent in Tarrytown.
Robert Just (1941-2018)
Robert S. Just, 77, of Glenham, died April 10, 2018, at St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh. He was a longtime member of the Highlands Country Club in Garrison.
Born in Manhattan on March 11, 1941, Robert was the son of Stanley and Anna (Wojtyna) Just. He was an officer at Fiduciary Trust in Manhattan until his retirement in 1976. He went on to be proprietor of Circle Food Stop at the Annsville Circle in Peekskill until 1996.
On Sept. 30, 1962, at St. Antanasius Church in Brooklyn, Robert married Rose DiGeronimo, who survives at home. He is also survived by his children, Donna Turer (Steve) of Beacon, Denise Ferguson (Jimmie Smith) of Beacon, and Steven Just (Christina) of Glenham, as well as seven grandchildren.
A funeral service was held April 14 at the McHoul Funeral Home in Fishkill. Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (stjude.org).
Clarence Michalis (1922-2018)
Clarence Fahnestock Michalis, 96, of Locust Valley and formerly of Garrison, died March 30, 2018.
Born in 1922 to Clarence and Helen Michalis, he lived in New York City and Garrison. He graduated from Buckley School, St Paul’s School and Harvard College and spent three years in the Navy as navigator on the USS Hall in the Pacific.
He worked at First National City Bank, and was CFO of Bristol-Myers Co., former chairman of St Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital, Cooper Union and Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation.
He also was the mayor of the Lattingtown for 48 years, past president of the Nassau County Museum of Art, former president of Piping Rock Club, commodore of Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club, and member of the Union Club, New York Yacht Club and Holland Lodge.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Cora Bush, and his children Cynthia Michalis, Mary Michalis, Cora Thomas and Helen Bonebrake (Michael); six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial was held April 13 at St. John’s Church in Lattingtown. Memorial donations may be made to the Merchant’s House Museum (merchantshouse.org) and the North Shore Land Alliance (northshorelandalliance.org).
