Bates Cutten

Bates Lee Cutten, 89, of Garrison, known to friends and family as “The Bear,” died May 11, 2018.

Born Jan. 7, 1929, in New York City, he was the son of Joseph and Harva (Wabuda) Cutten. His wife, Beverly, died before him.

Bates was a New York State trooper and investigator for 29 years before his retirement. He was a member of the New York State Police Shooting Team and a firearms and self-defense instructor. Bates was an avid golfer, bowler and loved the outdoors. He served during World War II with the U.S. Army in northern Italy.

He is survived by his sons Mark Cutten (Lisa) of Hermosa Beach, California; Scott Cutten (partner Brenda Curler) of  Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; Rod Cutten of Churchville, New York; and Eric Cutten (Orlando) of West Hollywood, California. He also is survived by his grandchildren Justin, Nathan, Nicole and Benjamin Cutten and his great-grandchildren Isaac Arsee, Sara Arsee, Olivia Cutten and Bensen Cutten.

Friends may call on Tuesday, May 15, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Clinton Funeral Home, 21 Parrott St., in Cold Spring. A funeral service will be held May 16 at 1 p.m. at St. Philip’s Church, 1101 Route 9D, in Garrison, followed by burial with military honors in the churchyard.
