Will Stark Scores 4 in Chargers Win

The Philipstown Chargers looked to continue their hot streak on June 3 versus the Washingtonville Force.

The Chargers got on the board first, 15 minutes after the opening whistle. Middie Luke Hammond made sharp pass to sprinting Will Stark, who nutmegged the Force keeper to score the first goal, putting the Chargers up 1-0.

The Force started running a good offsides trap, and were able to score a few minutes later off of a counter. A few minutes later, Frank Bentowski passed to fellow middie Kyle Mayo, who knocked in the 2nd Chargers goal with a well placed ground shot to the post. The Force came right back with a score of their own, making it 2-2.

A short time later, Chargers Alek Maasik took a shot that rebounded off the Force keeper, where Stark was waiting to tap in his second goal of the day, and the score was 3-2 Chargers.

The Chargers took the field for the second half with increased intensity. Mayo took the ball to the corner and made a brilliant cross to Stark who knocked in a header for his 3rd goal for a hat trick, 4-2 Chargers. Carter Bond continued the offense with a strong shot at the Force keeper, rebounded by Stark, and finally knocked in by Maasik to make the score 5-2 Chargers.

Stark continued his torrid offensive display when he took the ball to the 18-yard box and blasted a shot into the upper right corner, completing his 4-goal haul for the day. The Chargers pressed on offense, and Maasik made a nice pass to Collin Eng-Wong who just shifted from defense to striker to score his first goal of the day.

Eng-Wong was not done yet, as he got a second goal on a well-placed penalty kick a few minutes later. The defense led by Jesse Sherman, Zack Maher, Gabe Dabkowski, Quinn Petkus, and Ben Strol kept the ball in the opponent’s half of the field for most of the rest of the game. The offensive display by Philipstown resulted in a solid win, Chargers 8, Force 2.

Cohesive Teamwork Defeats Inferno

The visiting Wallkill Inferno faced off with the Philipstown Vikings (U9 boys), but weren’t able to overcome the well-coordinated play by the home team.

The Vikings stuck early in the match when right wing Parker Larsen used his speed to bring the ball upfield and centered it to Connor Keegan who put a shot past the Wallkill goalie. While the Wallkill offense mounted several attacks, the Vikings defense repelled most forays into their territory. When the Wallkill offense did penetrate the defensive line, goalie Patrick Shields shut down all attempts, ably protecting the Vikings goal.

In the second half of the match, a Vikings counter attack located Parker Larsen upfield who blasted a ball past the Wallkill goalie for a 2-0 advantage over their opponents. Vikings center Elias Moran then put the match out of reach when he lofted a clever ball into the left corner of the Wallkill goal before the match concluded in a 3-0 victory for the Vikings. With the end of their season near, the Vikings are playing determined soccer and their record now improves to 4-1-1.

The Vikings season will close with an away rematch versus the Yorktown Titans – the only team to defeat them this season – on Sunday, June 11, at noon.

A Friendly Matchup

Instead of a Thursday practice, the U9 In House Girls traveled to Beacon, where they had a first-ever friendly match with Beacon’s In House Girls program.

Philipstown had eight players and Beacon had 15. Playing 7-a-side, Philipstown got lots of playing time. While Beacon exhibited great ball control and dribbling skills, Philipstown showed tenacity in goal and on the field and impressed fans with their passing ability. It was a positive experience for all and Philipstown is grateful to Beacon for hosting. Spring season is coming to a close soon, but keep your eye out for these fast-flying girls this fall when they form the Philipstown Falcons travel team.
