U15 Arrows 7,  Washingtonville 3

The Philipstown boys’ U15 Arrows team announced its arrival to the league with a 7-3 victory over the Washingtonville Velocity on Sept. 9.

The newly formed team, under the direction of Coach Rudolf Van Dommele, started the scoring only a few minutes into the game when Ryan Eng-Wong put one into the net with the help of forwards Stephen Robinson and Gael Frezza.

Washingtonville responded, tying the game 1-1, but five minutes later, midfielder Danny Urbanak sent a well-timed pass to Robinson, who converted to put the Arrows on top 2-1. Minutes before halftime Eng-Wong scored his second goal for a 3-2 lead.

Ten minutes into the second, Robinson sent a cross to Urbanak, who blasted the ball, bringing Philipstown’s lead to 4-2. Washingtonville quickly responded. The Arrows then went into overdrive, scoring three more goals: Robinson scored for a second time on a beautiful shot to the right on a direct kick; Urbanak followed with his second goal on a breakaway; and the final goal was the third from Eng-Wong for a hat-trick.

The Arrow’s defenders, including keeper Jake Piotrowski, and backs Patrick DiNardo, Rowen Kuzminksi, Paolo Coumans, Adam Sendelbach and Ivan Sicilliano, kept pressure on the Washingtonville attack throughout the match. Precise passing from midfielders August Lee, Joseph Barrera, and Lucas Van Dommele helped the Arrows maintain possession and keep the action on Washingtonville’s turf for much of the game.

The Arrows next match up against Algonquin Newcastle at home on Sept. 16.

U11 Hawks 7, Shrub Oak 1

The Philipstown girls’ U11 Hawks dominated their first game of the season, notching a 7-1 home victory over Shrub Oak.

From the start the Hawks outpaced Shrub Oak with extraordinary team play, a relentless offense and always-at-the-ready defense. The seven goals were scored by Taya Robinson (2), Sami Thomas, Jenny Knox, Olivia Moran, Marisa Peters, Jessica Tudor, with additional attempts on goal by Anna-Catherine Nelson and Kate Perella. The Hawks, which returns its full roster from last year and adds Sofia Rasic, will be a fierce contender for the 2018 season.

Beekman 6, U8 Thunder 0

The Philipstown boys’ U8 Thunder lost their season opener against an impressive Beekman Saints team. Despite hearty defense by Xavier Fox, Sebastian Rasic, Gavin Drury and goalkeeper Everett Daly, who notched four saves (including a World-Cup-worthy “punch” in the first half), the Thunder could not stop the onslaught of the Saints offensive line. The Thunder fared better in the second half, with tenacious steals by Jameson Tormey, offensive pressure from Sela Lant and an exciting out-of-the-box face off against a breakaway striker by keeper Archer Stubbs, who clamped down on the ball for the save while the opponent sailed overhead.

Cortlandt 4, U13 Dragons 1

The Philipstown boys’ U13 Dragons put in a valiant effort in a 4-1 loss to the Cortlandt Spirit. Striker Ivan Lituma scored the Dragons’ only goal on a strong blast from 12 yards out. Coach Leo Firpo said he was proud of Dragons’ positive energy, passing, and teamwork.

Newburgh 3, U10 Vikings 1

In their first match of the fall season, the Philipstown boys’ U10 Vikings traveled to the Newburgh Armory Unity Center to face the CONA Union 09.

“This indoor field will play fast,” coach Ralph Moran told the boys in a pre-game huddle. “You can score from midfield, so keep your opponent within arm’s length on defense.”

From the first whistle, the Vikings found themselves on their heels. Coordinated passing, skillful ball control and offensive pressure by the home team lead to early, consecutive goals for the CONA Union 09. Down 2-0 in a flash, the Viking boys grasped their coach’s counsel.

The Vikings reinforced their defense and stymied many attacks, but the CONA Union 09 managed to score once more. On Vikings offense, center Darwin Saquipay nearly converted a free kick and forward Parker Larsen did convert a corner kick into a goal just before the end of the first half.

The Vikings defense found another gear in the second half, shutting down the CONA Union 09 and goalie Patrick Smith ably protected the goal. Accustomed to competing outdoors, on a regulation-size field, the Vikings were not comfortable on the indoor turf or compressed-size field. The match ended in a 3-1 loss for the Vikings who will next host the Cornwall Aztecs on Sept. 16.

Red Hook 6, U12 Phoenix 0

The Philipstown girls’ U12 Phoenix opened up their fall season at home against the perennially excellent Red Hook Twisters. Even playing with just one substitute, the Phoenix showed real improvement against a team with seven extra players.

The game saw the debut of Scotia Hartford at central defense and Dahlia Beck at midfielder. Scotia showed an immediate aptitude for the game, repeatedly connecting with Ada Caccamise in the right midfield to move the ball out of danger, and Dahlia continually frustrated the opponents on the wing.

Without any practices before Sunday, the game was a challenging one. After being repelled for some time, Red Hook started to break through in the middle of the first period with numerous fast breaks that pressured the Phoenix defense. After a scoring flurry and some repositioning, the second half featured a more evenly matched game, but the final score found the visitors winning 6-0. However, the Phoenix’s improvement from last year, and positive attitude even in a tough loss, bodes well for a great season.
