All around tight passing, excellent ball control and an impressive ability to quickly move the ball upfield contributed to the squad’s continued success. Vikings Prevail Over Aztecs

The Philipstown boys’ U10 Vikings visited the Cornwall Aztecs on Oct. 28 with a roster slightly diminished by illness. Defender Joey DeMarco was home recuperating and center Elias Moran was confined to cheering from the bench, but the Vikings played cohesively to compensate for their missing teammates.

Jack Fitzgerald pounced on a loose ball and scored to give the Vikings an early 1-0 lead. The Aztecs not only answered to level the match before halftime but sunk another a goal early in the second half to take a 2-1 lead. The Vikings offense, however, found another gear. Darwin Saquipay sent a perfectly placed ball forward to right wing Parker Larsen, who scored to even the match. Larsen then sped up the wing and around defenders for his next goal, seizing a 3-2 lead for the Vikings.

Vikings goalie Patrick Shields stopped several shots while Ames Jannetta, Trey Murphy and Oliver Choi ably defended their territory. Finally, it was Darwin Saquipay who sent a well-struck free kick beyond the goalie’s reach before the final whistle signaled a victory for the Vikings.

With the 4-2 comeback win, the Vikings are 4-2 and next host Newburgh Chavos Juventus on Sunday, Nov. 11 at noon.
