Newburgh man killed in drive-by
Police arrested four men on Jan. 25 after a 40-year-old Newburgh man was shot in a drive-by near Hasbrouck Street. Witnesses reported hearing nine shots.
Jermaine Cooper, 40, was hit in the lower torso and died at St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital at about 2 a.m. According to police, the occupants of a SUV fired at Cooper before fleeing. After being stopped by a Town of Newburgh officer, the vehicle took off, crossing the Mid-Hudson Bridge at high speed. The men were arrested after the vehicle crashed in Poughkeepsie, where they each live.
State police are also investigating a shooting that took place at 5 p.m. on Jan. 24 at the Hudson View Park Apartments in Fishkill that involved a man who appeared to be wearing black plastic bags over his torso, legs and feet. Police did not release further details but asked anyone with information to contact Investigator Frank Beaver at 845-677-7300 and reference SJS No. 8714813.
