Sister Eulalia Bonilla

Sister Eulalia Bonilla (1925-2019)

Eulalia Carmen Bonilla, 93, died April 4, 2019, in Hopewell Junction, surrounded by her religious sisters. Among her many assignments was working with the Hispanic community at St. John the Evangelist in Beacon.

Born Dec. 10, 1925, in El Salvador, she was the daughter of Jose and Rafaela (Hernandez) Bonilla. Sister Eulalia entered religious life in 1949 and professed her First Vows in 1953. In 1958, she professed her Perpetual Vows in the Congregation of the Oblates to Divine Love, now the Oblates to the Blessed Trinity at St. Aloysius Novitiate in Hopewell Junction.

Sr. Eulalia worked for many years in Colegio La Sagrada Familia in El Salvador, where she oversaw the discipline of the school and took care of the boarding students. She also served in Rome visiting the elderly and as a sacristan in the Motherhouse. She is survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered on April 8 at St. Columba Church in Hopewell Junction, followed by interment in St. Denis Cemetery.

Edward McDermott (1940-2019)

Edward J. McDermott, 79, died April 2, 2019.

Born in Beacon on March 16, 1940, he attended Beacon High School, where he was the class president.

He is survived by his companion, Amy Sheffer, and his nephews, Marc Cahill and Scot Cahill. Services were held April 8 at Calvary Cemetery in New Windsor.

Leonard Romanelli Jr. (1950-2019)

Leonard J. Romanelli Jr., 68, a lifelong resident of Beacon, died March 29, 2019, at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan.

Lenny was born in Beacon on May 6, 1950, the son of Leonard and Jennie (Failla) Romanelli. He was a graduate of St. John the Evangelist School, Beacon High School and SUNY New Paltz. Lenny was a retired probation officer who worked at the Fishkill Correctional Facility in Beacon.

Lenny is survived by his aunts, Mary Collins of Beacon and Mary Romanelli of Annapolis, Maryland, as well as his longtime friend, Carol Webster.

Family and friends will gather on Tuesday, April 9 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Riverview Funeral Home by Halvey, 2 Beekman Street, in Beacon. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home at 1 p.m., with burial to follow at St. Joachim Cemetery in Beacon.

Barbara Soriano

Barbara Soriano (1951-2019)

Barbara Marta Soriano, 68, a resident of Beacon since 2017, died April 3, 2019, at St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh.

Born in Legnica, Silesia, Poland on Jan. 30, 1951, she was the daughter of Marian and Filomena (Ginter) Prokop. She emigrated to the U.S. in 1968, settling in the Maspeth section of Queens and later Brooklyn. In 1971, she married Raphael Soriano, who died in 1987.

She worked for many years as a clerk for the New York City Department of Transportation. Barbara loved spending time with family and also enjoyed watching television shows and foreign films. At family gatherings, she always enjoyed helping prepare and cook meals.

Barbara is survived by her children: Raymond Soriano (Amie Falco-Soriano) of Glendale; Linda Soriano-Malave (Anthony Malave) of Beacon; and Nancy Soriano of Fishkill; her grandsons, Jason Soriano and Anthony Soriano; and her sisters, Alice Malaczek (Stanley) and Renata Kwiatkowski (Mitchell).

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered on April 8 at St. Mary, Mother of the Church in Fishkill with interment at Calverton National Cemetery in Long Island.
