State provides $17 million

The National Purple Heart Hall of Honor in New Windsor will expand by nearly 4,300 square feet after receiving $17 million in state funds.

The update to the hall, which opened in 2006, will include new exhibit space and multimedia presentations and emphasize the stories of individual award recipients.

The Purple Heart has been awarded to about 1.8 million U.S. service members who were wounded or killed by enemy action. The hall will be closed for construction beginning today (Nov. 15).

The Hall and the adjacent New Windsor Cantonment State Historic Site gallery will remain closed during the work, although the grounds will stay open. The buildings are expected to reopen by November 2020.
