Liam Gillespie

William (“Liam”) Gillespie, 72, of Cold Spring, died Nov. 18, 2019, at his home.

Born Dec. 12, 1946, in Donegal Town, County Donegal, Ireland, he was the son of Anthony and Edna (Mundy) Gillespie.

Liam emigrated to New York City with his family at age 13. In the 1980s he completed two New York City Marathons. In 1987 he and his wife and children moved to Cold Spring and, shortly after, he joined a running group called the Hash House Harriers, running with them for two decades.

Along with running, he enjoyed soccer, hiking and the beauty of the Hudson Valley. In 2016 he was proud to receive his certificate of membership in the 3500 Club, having climbed all 35 of the Catskill peaks over 3,500 feet, in both summer and winter.

Besides his wife, Elizabeth, he is survived by his children, Conor and Margaret Mary, his brothers, Eamonn Gillespie (Lena) and Frank Gillespie, and a sister, Rose Lanzisera (Vito).

A memorial service is being planned.
