Gary Carlo LaPorta, of Falls Church, Virginia, and formerly of Cold Spring, who died suddenly at age 71 on Feb. 10, 2019, was interred with military honors at Arlington National Cemetery on Dec. 10.
Gary was born in Beacon on Dec. 10, 1947, the son of Carlo and Hazel Edna (Tompkins) LaPorta, and raised in Cold Spring.
Gary served in the U.S. Army from 1968 to 1971, during the Vietnam War. (In 1968, he wrote a letter to the editor to argue that service members who opposed the war feared speaking out.) Following his service, Gary moved to Northern Virginia and worked for AT&T.
Gary and his late wife, June, also owned Miniatures from the Attic, a small business in Falls Church. After Gary closed the business, he earned a bachelor’s degree from George Mason University in Fairfax and until his death worked for the Commissioner of the Revenue for the City of Falls Church.
Gary is survived by his daughter, Connie Warnock; his siblings David LaPorta and Carla Darby; his nephews, Bryan Reilly and Erik LaPorta; and a niece, Amy LaPorta.
