It was founded in 2017 following gifts to UCI of two important private collections of California Art. Two years later, the university hired acclaimed art museum educator Kim Kanatani as its inaugural director to guide the museum’s future. Envisioned as the seminal investigator and presenter of California’s influence and innovation through art, Langson IMCA brings together students, faculty, scholars, artists, and other publics to generate new knowledge and learning, and foster transformative experiences inspired by California Art and its global contexts. The Assistant Director, Marketing and Communications (AD MarComm) for UCI Jack and Shanaz Langson Institute and Museum of California Art (Langson IMCA independently oversees a comprehensive communications program requiring a wide variety of marketing and communications media, including written, visual, digital and electronic, and associated technical applications. The AD MarComm is responsible for creatively and accurately expressing the mission and values of UCI and its museum/institute to engage a dual constituency (campus and community), both current and prospective. Serving as the chief marketing and communications officer and a member of the senior staff, the AD MarComm works collaboratively with management and a team of internal and external colleagues to promote and build awareness for the museum and institute, and to develop and execute organizational communications, market, and branding strategies for a highly visible program. The AD MarComm serves as an informed, articulate, and passionate advocate for Langson IMCA’s brand and is engaged with UCI Strategic Communications and all Langson IMCA divisions to expertly advance the museum/institute’s value proposition. Reporting to Langson IMCA’s Museum Director, this position plans, develops, and oversees all public relations, media relations, print and electronic communications, website, digital media and marketing, print and digital advertising, social media, and e-newsletter. The AD MarComm annually develops and implements a comprehensive plan integrating marketing and communications to heighten positive public perception of Langson IMCA; deliver key institutional messages; expand awareness of the permanent collection, exhibitions, programs, museum/institute senior team, and new facility; leverage opportunities for visibility; increase visitorship, both on-site and online; and amplify donor engagement initiatives. The AD MarComm is assisted by consultants in public relations, digital and social media, digital marketing, and graphic design, and aided by other staff who support Langson IMCA’s website presence and digital image database. B.A. degree in marketing, communications, humanities, or related field and / or equivalent experience / training. Advanced knowledge and understanding of all aspects of marketing and communications, including strategic planning for various media, technical aspects and requirements of various communication platforms, and most appropriate and effective applications, as well as project planning, implementation, and budget management of marketing and advertising campaigns, brand engagement, media relations, plus social and digital media campaigns Advanced knowledge and understanding of technical applications to direct professional technical staff, or personally perform technical work, including design concepts, various media, and applications. Advanced knowledge of UCI and Langson IMCA, including their missions, visions, goals, policies, and infrastructure; strong knowledge of current affairs and issues in higher education and the arts. Demonstrated ability to work successfully with internal and external colleagues (e.g., Langson IMCA staff, UCI faculty and staff in other departments, UCI Strategic Communications staff, etc.), as well as donors, advisors, volunteers, consultants, and vendors to achieve common goals. Advanced skills to create, develop, and implement long and short-term strategic marketing and communication plans. Advanced skills to advise, consult, and manage all aspects of marketing and communications, ranging from developing effective strategies to appropriately responding to inquiries regarding sensitive or complex issues or information. Excellent written, verbal,and interpersonal communications, active listening and political acumen skills. Superior editorial and copywriting skills. Excellent analytical, critical thinking, project management, and problem recognition, avoidance, and resolution skills. Thorough knowledge of location protocols and channels for communication internally and externally. Facility with a variety of software programs, databases, and other computing tools that aid marketing/communication efforts, such as Microsoft Office Suite, CRM systems, and social media platforms. Facility with data analysis as it applies to visitor behavior and audience segmentation. Proven ability to be effective and responsive in a fast-paced environment, with excellent time management and work prioritization skills. Demonstrated interest in the arts and community engagement, and commitment to DEAI practices Preferred: M.A. degree, preferably in communications, business administration, nonprofit management, art history, or the like and / or equivalent experience / training. Previous experience working in other cultural, academic, or nonprofit institutions. Special Conditions Required: Ability to work evenings and weekend, as required.
