Maria Pia Marrella, whose work has been shown locally at the Garrison Art Center, as well as in group shows at the Marina Gallery, will have a solo show at Marina Gallery throughout July. Marrella’s recent paintings are a departure from her former figurative narratives, but the work continues to express her affinities for dreams, primitive art, and myth. In search for personal symbols, Marrella revisits some of her past canvases by painting over, scraping color, a pulling out shapes from a dark, pictorial space, leaving races of past history, akin to pentimenti, alterations in a painting, evidenced by traces of previous work. The process of reworking and reinventing creates mysterious, lyrical compositions. These abstract paintings, in turn, generate natural and imagined imagery from cut-up, recycled canvases, invoked by nostalgic memories and emotions.
Also on view will be sculpture by Grace Knowlton, James Murray and David Program. The exhibit runs from the 1st to the 31st of July, with an Artist’s Reception to be held on Saturday, July 9, from 5-8 p.m. Marina Gallery is located at 153 Main St. in Cold Spring and is open Thursday to Sunday, from noon to 6 p.m. For more information, call 845-265-2204.
