Levi draws her themes from many sources, including the landscapes of the Hudson Valley and the intricate complexities found in ancient Coptic weavings. She sees herself as an “exuberant colorist,” a description borne out by the works’ many tones and shades — the deep ochre of Earth’s clays, the varied blues present in ocean and sky and the greens of spring — that burst from the surface of her collages.

Levi describes herself as an artist with a mission: “I see my work as celebrating life and its many varying possibilities.” She finds inspiration in the works of Henri Matisse, Piet Mondrian, Paul Cezanne and Kurt Schwitters. There are also unique qualities in her work that draw from her Native American heritage, an earlier career as a jazz dancer and her love of all forms of music.

Her works have been exhibited in galleries, museums and universities, both in the U.S. and in Europe.

The Spirit of Color opens in a reception with the artist Friday, June 7, from 6 to 8 p.m. The exhibition will be on view through June 30 at the Marina Gallery, located at 153 Main St. in Cold Spring.

Gallery hours are Thursday through Sunday from noon to 6 p.m., or by appointment. For more information, contact the Marina Gallery at 845-265-2204.
