Varsity forfeited first seven wins but eligible after Feb. 7 victory

The Beacon varsity boys’ basketball team, which forfeited their first seven victories after a player was discovered to be ineligible, made the playoffs on Feb. 7 with their sixth win, a 61-54 victory at Carmel. The Bulldogs are now 6-13 with one final game to play on Feb. 13 at home against Lakeland High School.

Jemond Galloway had 28 points and 17 rebounds and Alex Benson scored 19 points in the win over Carmel.

The Bulldogs made the cut because Section 1 uses a points system to determine which teams are seeded into the postseason. Each team needs 32 points to qualify. A win is worth four points but a team receives bonus points for each victory over an opponent that finishes with a winning record. The downside is that Beacon will have a low seed and play a top-seeded opponent in the first round.

The Bulldogs may be able to improve their position somewhat with a win over Lakeland. They defeated the Hornets, 84-75, at Shrub Oak on Feb. 4. The photos below, by Richard Kuperberg Sr., are from that game.
