Gussie Elmore (1925-2018)

Gussie Mae Oliver Elmore, 93, of Beacon, died Aug. 25, 2018, surrounded by family and friends.

Born Aug. 7, 1925, in Virginia Mine, Alabama, she was the daughter of the Rev. Miles and Catherine King Oliver. She attended grade school in Louisville, Kentucky, later moving to West Virginia, where she graduated in 1944 from Excelsior High School in War. She married Arthur Elmore.

She worked at the Barbridge Blanket Factory; Tuck Tape, where she was president of the union for seven years and served as financial secretary; and IBM, from which she retired in 1987.

Gussie was also a board member of the NSO; a volunteer for the Beacon Democratic Poll for 10 years and a kitchen monitor for South Avenue School. She was a member of the Star of Bethlehem Baptist Church since 1962 and later attended Beulah Baptist Church in Wappingers Falls before returning to her home church.

She enjoyed sports and was a Yankees and Knicks fan. She loved shopping and spending time with family and friends. Her motto was, “do unto others as you would have them to do unto you.”

She is survived by her children: Arthur Elmore Jr. of Fort Pierce, Florida; Sharlene Stout of Beacon; Corniel Elmore of Beacon; and Doris Guilford of Newburgh; her sister-in-law, Mary Oliver of Beacon; 15 grandchildren; and a host of great and great-great grandchildren. She also survived by her friends Sheila Williams, the Rev. Linda White and Jennifer McClinton.

A funeral service was held on Sept. 5 at the Star of Bethlehem Baptist Church, with interment at Fishkill Rural Cemetery.

Grace Green

Grace Green (1935-2018)

Grace Green, 82, of Beacon, died Aug. 31, 2018, at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx.

She was born in New York City on Nov. 1, 1935, the daughter of William Oliver and Charlotte Logan.

Grace worked several jobs before being hired at IBM in East Fishkill, where she spent 28 years as a computer programmer before her retirement. She enjoyed going on casino trips, playing bingo, eating out, going to movies and shopping.

Grace was a member of Beulah Baptist Church, where she served in many capacities including as a board member, treasurer, head of church programs, clerk and member of usher board and senior choir. Later she joined Springfield Baptist Church and served on its hospitality committee and became a “mother of the church.”

She is survived by her daughters, Debra Greene of Beacon, and Kim Green-Thompson (Jeff) of Newburgh; her grandchildren; Thomas E. Greene III, Andre’ Greene, Darius Garland, LaAsia Baldwin, LaTeek Thompson, LaKeem Thompson, Kara Thompson, Asvrue Thompson, Asirpel Thompson and Mylika Thompson; as well as her great-grandchildren.

She will lie in repose from 10 to 11 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 10, at Springfield Baptist Church, 8 Mattie Cooper Square, in Beacon. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., followed by interment at Fishkill Rural Cemetery.

Elaine Henderson

Elaine Henderson (1949-2018)

Elaine J. Henderson, 68, died of cancer on Sept. 4, 2018, at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie.

She was born Oct. 1, 1949, the daughter of Richard and Edith (Bishop) Hans and raised in Bayville.

Elaine worked as a nurse for more than 40 years at Long Island and St. Francis Hospitals.

She is survived by her sons, Bryan Henderson and Eric Henderson, and two sisters, Linda and Ellen. Her family will gather with friends on Tuesday, Sept. 11 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Libby Funeral Home, 55 Teller Ave., in Beacon. A celebration of life will be offered at 7:30 p.m.

Gordon VanBuren

Gordon VanBuren Jr. (1950-2018)

Gordon F. VanBuren Jr., 68, a longtime resident of Beacon and Wappinger, died Sept. 5, 2018.

He was born March 21, 1950, in Cold Spring, the son of Gorden and Shirley (Zeliph) VanBuren. On July 12, 1980, in Wappingers Falls, he married SallyAnn Eagan.

Gordon worked for 22 years as a pressman at the Nabisco plant in Beacon until his retirement. He enjoyed fishing and woodworking and being “Poppy” to his grandchildren.

Along with his wife of 38 years, Gordon is survived by his daughters, Christine Johnson (Ruben) and Tracey VanBuren; his stepsons, Carl Barker Jr. (Valerie) and Thomas Barker; and his grandchildren: Anthony (Kaitlin), Devin (Karolina), Morgan, Ashley, Hannah, Brian, Christa, Brittany and Kevin. He also is survived by a great-grandson, John Ortiz.

His family will gather with friends on Saturday, Sept. 15 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Libby Funeral Home, 55 Teller Ave., in Beacon, and a celebration of life will be offered at 2:30 p.m.
