Mystic Whaler under full sail

Cold Spring’s main dock continues to welcome interesting nautical guests. The latest was the Mystic Whaler which paid a visit on May 24. The stately, 110-foot schooner usually serves as a commercial vessel, offering cruises on Long Island Sound and other regional waterways. When spring rolls around it can be seen plying the Hudson River, teaming up with the staff of the Clearwater
Clearwater, a Hudson River sloop and camp, was founded by folk singer Pete Seeger. The group’s mission is to educate “the next generation of environmental leaders.”  Together, Clearwater and Mystic Whaler offer hands-on educational river cruises for students.
Dave Conover, Clearwater education director, told Philipstown.info that a group of students from Ossining High School participated in the May 24 cruise after making the trip to Cold Spring by train.  The three-hour educational voyages include such activities as fish identification, water testing, sailing lessons and Hudson River history.  Students from Haldane will set sail on the  Mystic Whaler in mid-June.
