Margaret Burke Tomann, 96, of Garrison, died Nov. 3, 2016, after a brief illness.

Born Feb. 21, 1920, in Brooklyn and raised in New York City and its boroughs, she attended the University of Vermont and worked as a buyer for Wanamaker’s and at Anaconda Copper. It was there she met Kenneth J. Tomann, her husband of 59 years. He died in 2003. The couple moved to Garrison in 1954 and raised eight children at their home off the Old Albany Post Road, where she resided at the time of her death.

Margie, as she was known to her family, had one brother, William “Billy” Burke, who died before her. Her father’s parents (Burke-Greally) were from Grange, Corrandulla, north of Galway. Her mother’s family (Keogh) was from the Killarney area.

She retired as manager of the West Point Cadet Bookstore, ran needlecraft shops in Garrison and Peekskill and for years was librarian at the Good Shepherd Mount Saint Florence School in Peekskill. For the past 30 years she read, baked and cared for her ever-growing family.

Memorial donations may be sent to Franciscan Sisters of the Atonement, Graymoor, 41 Old Highland Turnpike, Garrison, NY 10524.
