Sister Barbara Bernauer (1915-2016)
Sister Barbara Bernauer, 101, a Franciscan Sister of the Atonement from Graymoor, died Dec. 30, 2016, at Lurana Health Care Residence of St. Francis Convent in Garrison.
Sr. Barbara (Mary Catherine Elizabeth “Girlie”) was born in Muenster, Texas, on Nov. 10, 1915, to Joseph and Catherine (Miller) Bernauer. She is survived by her Sisters in Community, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Her brothers Matthew, Louis and Frank, and her sisters Evelyn Nachtman and Marie Kuehler died before her.
Sister entered the convent on May 12, 1931. She professed her first vows on Oct. 5, 1933, and her final vows on Aug. 26, 1939. As an Atonement missionary, Sister served in parish, catechetical and pastoral ministries in New York (Schenectady, Brushton, Palmer, Lake Placid, Schuylerville and Garrison), as well as in Copperton, Utah; San Juan, California; and in Connecticut (Mt. Carmel and Hamden).
Sister cared for her aged mother and a brother in Texas for a number of years before returning to Graymoor in 2007. A funeral mass was held on Jan. 3, followed by burial in the Sisters’ cemetery.
Italia Iaconangelo (1934-2016)
Italia Iaconangelo, 82, of Cold Spring, died on Dec. 25, 2016.
Born on Nov. 23, 1934, in Naples, Italy, she was the daughter of Salvatore Demata and Leonilda Vitale. Italia was the co-owner of Armando’s Delicatessen in Cold Spring for 10 years and a cook at Sorrento’s Restaurant in Peekskill.
On June 21, 1964, in Naples, she married Armando Iaconangelo, who survives her. They were married for 52 years and raised their family in Cold Spring. She also is survived by her children Marilena Serradas (Airinhos), Leonilda Bara (Michael), Fiorenzo Iaconangelo (Loree) and Anna Smith (Donald). She also leaves her grandchildren, Maggie, Victoria, Elizabeth, Laura, Alex, Michelle, Cameron and Isabella.
She also is survived by her brothers Oresto Demata (Assunta) and Angelo Demata and sisters Rita Demata (Salvatore) and Maria Mele (Luigi).
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Dec. 29 at Our Lady of Loretto, with interment at Cold Spring Cemetery.
