Destroyed many businesses and displaced residents in village

The Wappingers Falls Business & Professional Association (BPA) is raising funds for the businesses and residents displaced following a fire in the central business district on June 3.

The fire destroyed a number of buildings along East Main Street. Its cause has not been determined. No one was injured, but several businesses suffered total losses and 18 adults and 14 children were displaced, according to the Mid-Hudson Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross.

The BPA has launched a fundraising drive through GoFundMe that so far has raised $7,800, and on Sunday, June 11, Graceland Tattoo, located across the street from the fire, will be offering small, walk-in tattoos and donating the proceeds.

Volunteers and donations of toiletries and bedding and towels are needed, as well as furniture and household items but no more clothing. Volunteers are needed at the American Legion at 7 Spring St. to sort donated items. Email [email protected] for details.
