Hiker Dies Near Breakneck

Falls while climbing off trail

A hiker died on Thursday (May 24) near Breakneck Ridge after falling about 100 feet during a climb.

Kenny Steier, 25, of LaGrange, was with two friends on the Washburn Trail near Bull Hill, according to the state parks department. They had gone off the trail and were climbing the old Mt. Taurus quarry without equipment when Steier fell about 6 p.m.

Members of the state park police, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Department and the Philipstown Volunteer Ambulance Corps responded.

Steier attended Arlington High School, Dutchess Community College and SUNY Oswego. He worked at Raymour & Flanigan and was a member of Grace Bible Church in Wappingers Falls.

Steier is survived by his parents and five siblings. A memorial service will be held at Calvary Chapel of the Hudson Valley in Poughkeepsie at 2 p.m. on May 30.

A Brooklyn man, Jason Kindopp, 48, died on Breakneck in July after falling about 30 feet.
