David Alkin (1964-2018)

David Alkin, 54, of Beacon, died Sept. 7, 2018, in Newburgh. He was born Jan. 11, 1964, in the Bronx.

Graveside services were held Sept. 13 at the family’s plot at Beth David Cemetery in Elmont.

Anna Marie Buckley (1942-2018)

Anna Marie Buckley, 75, of Beacon, died Sept. 27, 2018, at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie after a short illness.

She was born Oct. 1, 1942, in Bridgeport, Connecticut, the daughter of James Franklin and Viline (Wiand) Weir. On June 18, 1961, she married William Arthur Buckley, who died in 2015.

Anna was a foster parent for many years, retiring in 1989.

She is survived by her daughter, Anna Marie Riccoboni (Gino); grandsons Peter Riccoboni and Anthony Riccoboni; two sisters, Marion Baxter of Wappingers Falls and Margaret Quick of Beacon; and a brother, James Weir of Billings, New York.

Funeral services were private. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society (cancer.org).

Helen Martyak (1927-2018)

Helen Martyak, 91, of Binghamton and formerly of Beacon, died Sept. 29, 2018.

Born in Binghamton on April 3, 1927, she was the eldest and last surviving of the seven children of Michael and Susan (Potusky) Cushner.

In 1952, she married John E. “Jack” Martyak, who died in 1985. They were the first couple married at the new Holy Spirit Byzantine Catholic (Eastern Rite) Church in Binghamton.

During the late 1960s the couple and their children moved to Beacon to work for IBM, where Helen became a manager. After retiring, she and three close friends traveled extensively, including to Africa, Jordan, Israel and Hawaii. She returned to Binghamton in 1992.

She is survived by her children Dianne Metzar (William); Mary Cipar (John); Nicholas Martyak (Judy) and Daniel Martyak (Maureen). Her son John Martyak Jr. died in 2010. She also is survived by 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Oct. 5 at Holy Spirit Byzantine Catholic Church, with burial at Holy Spirit Cemetery in Kattelville. Memorial donations may be made to the church or to the Broome County Humane Society (bchumanesoc.com).

Don Varian

Don Varian (1941-2018)

Donald A. Varian Sr., 77, a longtime resident of Beacon, died Oct. 3, 2018, at his home. He was born May 6, 1941. His wife Barbara Ann died before him.

Don worked as a blacktop foreman at Sun Up Enterprises in Wappingers Falls for most of his life. He was an avid fisherman and lover of the outdoors.

He is survived by his children, Donald A. Varian Jr. (Amy), Paulette Varian and Denise Varian, as well as seven grandchildren: Allison, Michael, Trinity, Serenity, James (Samantha), Jared and Melanie. He also is survived by his adopted children: Tina Arroyo, Elmer, Elmer Jr., Mercedes and Jayden.

The family will gather on Sunday, Oct. 7, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Libby Funeral Home, 55 Teller Ave., in Beacon, for a 7 p.m. service, followed by a private interment at the discretion of the family.
