Marty Flynn (1963-2019)

Martin “Marty” J. Flynn, 56, a lifelong resident of Beacon and Glenham, died April 27, 2019, at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan.

Marty was born Jan. 3, 1963, in Beacon and raised in Glenham. He was the son of John and Dorothy (Smith) Flynn. He retired as a corrections officer at Fishkill Correctional Facility.

On June 11, 1988, he married Mary Ann O’Herron, who survives at home.

Marty was a fan of the New York Giants and the San Francisco Giants. He loved vacationing in Florida, playing golf and enjoying a good cigar. He was a parishioner of St. Joachim-St. John the Evangelist Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus, Trinity Council, B.P.O.E. Lodge No. 1493 in Beacon, the St. Rocco’s Society and the Southern Dutchess Country Club.

Marty also was the assistant varsity coach for the Beacon High School baseball team from 1998 to 2006 and a member of their 1998 Hall of Fame team that reached the final four of the state tournament.

In addition to his wife, Marty is survived by his daughter, Jenna Flynn of Hoboken, New Jersey; and his brothers, Dennis Flynn (Kathy) of Wappingers Falls and John Flynn (Joann) of Vancouver, Canada.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held May 4 at St. Joachim Church, with burial at St. Joachim Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (lls.org).

Ursula Henderson

Ursula Henderson (1939-2019)

Ursula Else Henderson, 79, a resident of Beacon since 1961, died on April 21, 2019, at the Rosary Hill Home in Hawthorne.

Born Aug. 2, 1939, near Hamburg, Germany, she was the daughter of Kurt and Hertha (Grutzmacher) Polte. She married William J. Henderson, who died in 1999.

She is survived by her son, William K. Henderson (Michelle), her grandchildren, Emma Henderson, Joseph Henderson and Michael Brand, her great-grandchildren Grayson Hendersonn, Jayden Henderson and Noah Brand; her brother, Wolfgang Polte (Beatrice); and her niece and nephew, Patricia and Alexander.

Through the years, everyone came to know Ursula as “Omi.” She loved sharing stories of her childhood and life experiences. She was an avid book reader, bird watcher and gardener, but her favorite times were those spent with her family, especially her granddaughter, Emma.

A graveside service will be held on Thursday, May 23, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Wappingers Falls. Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital (stjude.org).

Maria Hernandez

Maria Hernandez (1948-2019)

Maria Ortiz Hernandez, 71, a longtime Beacon resident and recently of Highland, died April 26, 2019.

She was born March 27, 1948, in San Sebastian, Puerto Rico. She married Santiago Hernandez and was the mother of seven children.

She is survived by her children Migdalia, David, Rose and Antonio, 18 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. A funeral service took place in early May at Pepino Memorial Park in San Sebastián, Puerto Rico.

Pamela Sherman

Pamela Sherman (1954-2019)

Pamela A. Sherman, 65, of Pine Plains, and formerly of Beacon, died May 1, 2019, at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie surrounded by loved ones after a two-year battle with cancer.

Born in Beacon on March 10, 1954, she was the daughter of James White. She graduated from Beacon High School and attended Dutchess Community College. She was employed as a data entry operator for Dutchess County Department of Community and Family Services for 30 years until her retirement in March.

In 1982 in Fishkill, Pamela married Jacob Sherman, who survives at home.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children; Heather Wilkerson (Chris) and Brian Sherman (Jennifer); and five grandchildren: Tyler, Brian and Jacob Sherman, and Ethan and Ivy Wilkerson.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, May 7, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Allen Funeral Home, 1605 Main St., in Pleasant Valley. Funeral services will be held at 7:30 p.m.

Mary Stafford (1921-2019)

Mary C. Stafford, 98, of Wallkill, and formerly of Beacon, died May 1, 2019.

She was born on Feb. 24, 1921, in Cerignola, Italy, the daughter of Vito and Filomena (DiBennedetto) Gerardo.

Mary was a clerk for the Beacon Hat Factory for many years and also worked for the former Grand Union on Main Street in Beacon. She was a parishioner of St. John’s Church and was past president of St. Rocco’s Woman’s Society.

She is survived by her daughters, Carol Moranski (Frank) of Wallkill and Donna Smith (Eric) of Old Lime, Connecticut; a sister, Lois Sproat of Wallkill; three grandchildren, Joshua Smith (Kelly), Megan Walls (David) and Mandy Nibby (Dana); and two great-grandchildren, Emma Smith and Grace Walls.

A graveside service will take place at St. Joachim Cemetery in Beacon. Memorial donations may be made to Hudson Valley Hospice (hvhospice.org).
