Dubbed “one of the original cast members,” Douglas was a lifelong resident of Cold Spring, and was born in Butterfield Hospital on May 9, 1930, to the late Kenneth “King” and Evelyn Roach Logan. He died peacefully in his sleep on June 23rd. He was predeceased by his siblings, Jacqueline Ogley and Roderic Logan.

Douglas was quarterback of the Haldane Blue Devils and graduated from The Choate School in 1948. He went on to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute to study design before being drafted into the U.S. Army, where he spent two years in Germany, on the Czech border.

Douglas returned to work as a designer running the family business, George A. Logan and Sons, which recently celebrated 134 years of continuous memorial and design operations across from the Cold Spring Cemetery. He learned the business through the guidance of his grandfather, George A., and father, Kenneth.

In his 65-year career, in addition to designing headstones for thousands of fellow local Hudson Valley residents, Douglas worked primarily with West Point. Of distinction, he designed both the Eisenhower and MacArthur Monuments, as well as innumerable headstones and memorials for West Point graduates and dignitaries.

Douglas had an early marriage to fellow Cold Spring resident, Dr. R. Lynn Markle, with whom he had three children, all of whom survive him: Andrea Logan, Jonathan Wood Logan, of Portland, Oregon, and Stephanie Logan Ruffin, of Richmond, Virginia. He is also survived by four grandchildren: Emma Ruffin Kuhn, Saunders Ruffin, Alexander Logan and Olivia Ruffin, as well as his beloved Millie Ruffin.

He later married Krystyna Shumway, whom he survived.

Douglas had a true life-love match with his beloved partner and wife of 40 years, Vera Millard Logan, with whom he shared two stepsons: Kent (wife Marisa and daughters, Isabella and Sophia) and Christopher Millard. He is also survived by three nieces, Leslie Nageli, Diana Moreau and Annie Wright.

Douglas will be celebrated on a beautiful day this fall at a private family service, and will be interred with his wife and love, Vera. The family would love to hear from you if you have a fond memory or “Douglas” story to share, email [email protected].
