Toby Gallagher (1946-2018)
Maureen “Toby” Gallagher, 71, of Beacon, died March 20, 2018, at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie.
She was born in Beacon on July 10, 1946, the daughter of Joseph and Vera (Sutherland) Gallagher. She graduated from Roy C. Ketcham High School in 1964, and for many years worked as an office clerk for the federal government in Washington, DC. She was a longtime member of the Beacon Democratic Committee.
Maureen is survived by her seven siblings: Jon Gallagher (Bernice) of Cornwall; Colleen Dunay of Fishkill; Dennis Gallagher of LaGrangeville; Kathleen Sztumerski (Gary) of Fishkill; Barry Gallagher of New Bern, North Carolina; Mickey Gallagher of Staatsburg; and Terry Gallagher (Janet) of Sugarloaf, Pennsylvania.
A graveside service was held March 23 at St. Joachim Cemetery in Beacon. Memorial donation may be made to the charity of your choice.
Ellin Haley (1934-2018)
Ellin Haley, 83, a former Beacon and Manhattan resident, died March 12, 2018, at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie.
She was born July 11, 1934, in Beacon, the daughter of Herbert and Mary (Supple) Haley. She worked as an executive assistant for Bristol-Myers Squibb and Clairol in Manhattan before her retirement.
Ellin was a world traveler visiting more than 20 countries, including Turkey, Russia, Uruguay, Argentina and most of Europe.
She is survived by 18 nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be private.
Pablo Murillo (1960-2018)
Pablo E. Murillo, 57, a longtime resident of Beacon, died March 20, 2018, at his home, surrounded by his family.
He was born in Pereira, Colombia, on July 17, 1960 the son of Pablo and Teolinda (Galindo) Murillo. On June 8, 1987, he married Nelly Arias, who survives at home.
Pablo worked at New York Presbyterian Hudson Valley Hospital in Peekskill prior to his illness. He was a hardworking man who was full of joy.
In addition to his wife, Pablo is survived by his son, Steven Murillo, and five sisters and three brothers.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held March 23 at St. John the Evangelist Church in Beacon, with burial at St. Joachim Cemetery.
Father Peter Napoli (1945-2018)
Father Peter Napoli, 72, died March 24, 2018, at St. Lawrence Friary in Beacon.
Peter was born in Brooklyn on July 26, 1945, the son of Joseph and Lillian Venditti. He made his first profession of vows on Sept. 5, 1965, at St. Patrick’s Friary in Wilmington, Delaware. He was ordained on June 9, 1973, at Immaculate Conception Church in the Bronx.
Following his ordination, he worked in the area of formation at St. Lawrence Friary in Beacon and St. Francis Seminary in Lafayette, New Jersey. In 1981 he began his pastoral ministry in various parishes of the province. Much of his time and energy was devoted to the Spanish apostolate.
He is survived by a number of cousins. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on March 28 at St. Lawrence Friary, with burial at St. Lawrence Friary Cemetery.
Betty Nusbaum (1944-2018)
Mary Elizabeth “Betty” Nusbaum, 73, of Beacon, died March 26, 2018.
Born Oct. 24, 1944, in Cold Spring, she was the daughter of Raymond and Alpha (Loop) Best.
Betty is survived by her daughter, Brenda Sarcone (Michael) of Glenham and a son-in-law, Eugene Dillinger.
Betty was known as “Mamach” to her seven grandchildren: Cherie Hernandez (Matt), Michael Sarcone, Anthony Sarcone, Joseph Sarcone, Aaron Dillinger (Heather), Andrew Dillinger (Lauren) and Jeremie Dillinger; and her six great-grandchildren: Hope, Giselle, Matthew, Isabelle, Ava and Madelyn. She also is survived by her sisters Jacqueline Dodson and Joan Williams.
A celebration of Betty’s life will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, March 30, at the Libby Funeral Home, 55 Teller Ave., in Beacon, followed by interment at the Fishkill Rural Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Sister Mary of the Cross (Barbara Salucci) (1931-2018)
Sister Mary of the Cross (Barbara Salucci) of the Monastery of the Incarnation in Beacon died March 24, 2018, at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx.
Sister Mary was born May 14, 1931, in Brooklyn, the daughter of Guido and Frances (Giordano) Salucci. She grew up in Floral Park, Long Island, and attended New Rochelle College. In 1951 she entered the Carmel of St. Joseph in the Bronx and made her profession of vows on Feb. 24, 1953. Sister moved to Beacon when the Bronx community relocated in 1982.
Sister Mary gave herself completely to the Carmelite contemplative life from her earliest years, using her gifts in many areas. A lover of beauty in all aspects, she fostered it in all her undertakings. Sister Mary served in many capacities during her life in Carmel, including as councilor, cook, treasurer and gardener. The sisters appreciate the natural beauty that surrounds us in Beacon and in her care of our property, Sister helped enhance the simple beauty of our monastery grounds.
As subprioress in community, Sister spent many hours helping the community to move forward with its understanding and practice of the liturgy in the Eucharistic celebrations and the Divine Office. In her later years, she was a member of the community’s liturgy committee and one of the community organists. She also served as treasurer and councilor for the Metropolitan Association of Contemplative Communities.
Sr. Mary closed her personal introduction on our website with the following words: “Spiritual growth, which includes a healthy community life and a deep interior life, is the ideal of our life as Carmelites. May God grant that both are in good balance—or at least are growing—in this person that I am.”
She is survived by her brother, Raymond Carlucci (Tove), and her nephews, Vagard and Kai, who reside in Norway.
Friends may call at the Monastery of the Incarnation, 89 Hiddenbrooke Drive, in Beacon from 2 to 6 p.m. on Monday, April 2, and from 9:30 to 10 a.m. on Tuesday, April 3. There will be a prayer service at 5 p.m. Sunday, April 1. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Monastery at 10:30 a.m. on April 3, with burial to follow at Ascension Cemetery in Airmont.
Mary Ann Smythe (1948-2018)
Mary Ann Farmer Smythe, 69, of Beacon, died March 23, 2018, at home, surrounded by her family.
Born Nov. 21, 1948, in the Bronx, she was the daughter of Ralph and Ann (Cannata) Fidanzato.
Mary Ann worked in mortgage banking before becoming a floral designer. She had a passion for landscaping and loved to garden. Mary Ann loved to spend time with her family and especially loved to cook, bake and read with her grandchildren.
She recently married Charlie Smythe, who survives at home. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children, Tommy Russo Jr. (Jeannie), Anthony Russo (Tammy) and Karen Russo Marcello (Jay); her grandchildren, James, Julianna, Dominic, Anthony (AJ), Kristiana, Dylan and Brody; and her sister, Susan Milo (Pete).
A Mass of Christian Burial was held March 27 at St. John the Evangelist Church in Beacon, with cremation following at Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Hudson Valley Hospice (hvhospice.org).
Evelyn White (1948-2018)
Evelyn A. White, 69, a longtime resident of Beacon, died March 20, 2018, at Regional Hospice & Palliative Care Center in Danbury.
Evelyn was born Sept. 9, 1948, in White Plains, the daughter of Samuel and Millie (Carollo) Warner. She married Richard White, who survives her after 47 years of marriage. For many years, Evelyn worked for Reader’s Digest in Chappaqua.
In addition to her husband, Evelyn is survived by her sister, Susan Thornton (Mark).
