Prisoner died at Beacon prison a year ago

Ten members of the family of Samuel Harrell, a prisoner who died at the Fishkill Correctional Center in Beacon on April 21, 2015, will hold a hunger vigil and rally to mark the anniversary of his death. According to eyewitnesses, Harrell was assaulted by as many as 20 officers who kicked and punched him before dragging him handcuffed down a flight of stairs.

The family members and about a dozen supporters will begin a five-day fast on April 21. They also will hold a rally on the third day of the vigil on the west side of Memorial Park, near Matteawan Road, from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 23. It will feature gospel singer Ralph Williams, Red Wing Blackbird Theater, the New Progressive Baptist Church Choir and Praise Dance, poet Tiffany Van Dyke, among others.
