Jim Bopp (1948-2024)
James A. Bopp, a lifelong Beacon resident, died of cancer on July 6 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie.
He was born March 15, 1948, in Beacon, the son of Henry and Gladys (Stecher) Bopp.
After graduating from Beacon High School in 1966, he served in the U.S. Air Force, where he was a bugler with the Air Force Drum and Bugle Corps. He was known for his welding and leatherwork.
Jim had a fierce passion for all things nature, his family said, including hiking, bike riding, fishing and his beloved Mount Beacon. He was a Beaconite through and through.
He is survived by his children, Tanya Volkmann (John) of Hopewell Junction and Jason Bopp (Dawn Mahoney) of Cortlandt Manor; his granddaughter, Ava Volkmann; his step-grandson, Jake Mahoney; his sister, Barbara Jung of Newburgh; and his brother, Wayne Bopp of Beacon. His sister-in-law, Gina, her son, Justin and his children’s mother, Karen Samuels, died earlier.
Family and friends will gather on Monday (July 15) from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Libby Funeral Home, 55 Teller Ave. in Beacon.
Clarence “June” Heroy (1935-2024)
Clarence Michael “June” Heroy, 89, died July 8 at the Castle Point VA Medical Center in Wappingers Falls.
He was born in Beacon on March 2, 1935, the son of Clarence and Rose (Baracca) Heroy. He was affectionately known as Junie or Uncle June.
As a young man, he was a projectionist at the Roosevelt Theater in Beacon, which was owned by his family. Later, he worked at Castle Point and Nabisco and retired from Federal Paper when the plant closed. June served in the U.S. Air Force from 1953 to 1957 and was a member of the Democratic Party.
June was an avid bowler and loved to play cards. He was an animal lover and a wonderful cook, his family said. One of his guilty pleasures was eating pizza regularly from Roma Nova. He was also a baker who treated everyone to a homemade birthday cake.
June was kind, generous and a barrel of laughs, which endeared him even more to his many nieces, nephews and godchildren, his family said. Each of them has fond memories of a special uncle.
June is survived by his sister, Helen Byers; his niece, Kimberley Bradley-Lennon (Kevin); a great-niece, Autumn Lennon; his nephew’s wife, Migdalia Bradley; and three godchildren: John Keenan, Angie Bertalot and Toni Carpenter. His sister, Phyllis Neary; and his nephews, Joseph Bradley and Bryan Byers, died earlier.
A graveside service with military honors will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday (July 20) at Fishkill Rural Cemetery.
