Lawrence Bruce Howell, 74, of Mexico, New York, and formerly of Cold Spring, died Sept. 6.

He was born Sept. 12, 1949, in Cold Spring, the son of Howard and Iva Marie (Zeliph) Howell. He graduated from Haldane High School in 1967 and attended the New York City Police Academy. After the academy, Larry joined the New York City Police Department, retiring at the rank of lieutenant in 1990. He was a longtime member of the Philipstown Lodge, becoming a Master Mason in 1979.

Larry will be remembered as a devoted partner, father, grandfather and friend, his family said. He appreciated the beauty of the world around him, whether on his travels or while watching the local wildlife at his home in the woods. Larry’s lighthearted nature made every moment with him memorable, they said. He was known for his sense of humor, always smiling and quick to share a good laugh.

He is survived by his companion, Elaine Amerosa; his daughters, Stephanie Almasi (Daniel) of Ulster Park, Emily Howell-Schiff (Terry) of Ridgewood, New Jersey, and Elizabeth Spear (Daniel) of Warwick; and his grandchildren: Tyler Giordano, Adeline and Charlotte Schiff, and Nathan and Evelyn Spear. He is also survived by Elaine’s children, Cynthia Bick (Patrick) and Jamie Sheehy (Mike) and her grandchildren, Gianna Amerosa and Isabella Sheehy.

In addition, Larry is survived by his siblings, Jane Baltich (George), Howard Howell Jr. (Anna) and Gayle Quackenbush (Tom). His sister, Marianne Trimble, and Elaine’s daughter, Michele Gowans, died earlier.

Family and friends gathered on his birthday (Sept. 12) for a memorial service at the Clinton Funeral Home. in Cold Spring. Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research (stjude.org) or the Shriners Children’s (shrinerschildrens.org) hospitals.
