Joseph E. Powers, 94, a longtime Beacon resident, died June 11 at his home.

He was born Aug. 22, 1929, in Elmira, the son of Michael and Anna (Malloy) Powers.

Joseph served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. His family said his outgoing and hardworking personality led him to pursue a variety of professions. He also had a 32-year career as a corrections officer and worked in the medical field. In his free time, he enjoyed watching New York sports teams, including the Rangers, Giants and Yankees. He was a member of St. Mary, Mother of the Church in Fishkill.

Joseph is survived by his children, Lisa Powers of Beacon, Michael Powers of Cohoes, Christopher Powers (Christine) of Highland and Kevin Powers (Anya) of Newburgh; his sister, Fran Monroe of Elmira; and a grandson, Kyle Joseph Palmer. His wife Maria and siblings, Betty and Michael (Maryjo) Powers, died earlier.

His family will gather with friends on June 17 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary, Mother of the Church, 106 Jackson St. in Fishkill, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated followed by interment and military honors at the St. Joachim Cemetery in Beacon. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society (cancer.org).
