The kids will be out of school and the birds in hand to “en-raptor” them next Monday when Scenic Hudson holds its School’s Out Winter Fun Day, in Beacon. The free Jan. 16 event, from 12 noon to 4 p.m. at Long Dock Park, takes advantage of the national holiday honoring Martin Luther King and the season to help kids explore the outdoors and some of the creatures who dwell in it.
The program gets off the ground with a show by a leading expert on birds of prey, a trained falconer who will display six of his raptor friends -– including a golden eagle with its 7-foot wingspan. After that, young participants can search for similar birds in their natural habitat, tour the park, try out snowshoes, learn how to start a fire and build a shelter the Native American way, and discover the unique geometry of snowflakes. A parent or guardian must accompany youngsters and they should wear appropriate apparel, including boots, gloves, hats, and gaiters or snowpants, and bring a lunch. Long Dock Park is within a short walk of the Metro-North train station near the Beacon waterfront.
