Caller wants gift card for ‘warrant’

The Putnam County sheriff is warning residents about a phone scam in which a caller claims an arrest warrant can be avoided by sending a gift card.

The caller identifies himself as “Sgt. Cook” from the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office and claims the person did not respond to a jury summons and that an arrest warrant will be issued unless they buy a digital gift card and share the code.

Law enforcement will never ask someone to pay by gift card, the sheriff said, advising that anyone receiving a scam call hang up. Anyone who has been deceived and suffered a financial loss is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at 845-225-4300 so it can investigate.
